A report from the MFL department on an artistic project
Karneval is the celebration that comes before Lent and is celebrated in many countries around the world. It is a traditional time of fasting before Easter. Karneval or Fasching, as it is also known in Germany, is celebrated with masquerade parades and parties. To celebrate the festival this year, Year 9 German students produced some fantastic masks, many of which were of such a high quality that they will be displayed in our language classrooms for all to see. All students showed a great deal of enthusiasm and creativity for the event and thoroughly enjoyed learning about a new aspect of German life and culture.

News of an entertaining approach to learning languages
All boys in Year 8 at Lordswood Boys’ School, together with some visiting pupils from Turves Green Boys’ School and King Edwards Five Ways, were treated to a visit from the Onatti Theatre Company in March.
Two very talented German actors kept over a hundred pupils thoroughly entertained for an hour. Pupils were able to use their knowledge of German to follow the play ‘Erster Eindruck’ which was about first impressions of a teenage girl and boy.
The comedy and skilful acting meant pupils loved the experience. Pupils were amazed at how much they understood and how well they followed the story. Two pupils were persuaded to go onto the stage to take part and their participation and good-humour added to the great atmosphere. Thank you to the SWAN network who funded the visit, the fantastic Onatti actors and all the enthusiastic pupils who made the morning such a success.
